8.2 AN ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK OF INTERNATIONALISATION STRATEGIES

The discussion on globalisation has been obscured by best-practice cases and wishful thinking on the one hand and outright rejections that international competition has undergone serious changes on the other hand. This has led to rather simplistic debates on questions such as ‘globalisation – yes or no?’ In reality, international competition and internationalisation strategies change constantly, but that does not necessarily imply that companies, competition or technologies become more ‘global’. Therefore, globalisation is best interpreted as a strategic objective rather than as an accomplished reality. Put differently, a firm may hope to realise ‘globalisation’ yet fail.

This section depicts the elements of a globalisation strategy as well as its trajectory, including the effects on the firm’s domestic and international environment. Section 8.2.1 introduces the building blocks for the analysis of internationalisation strategies. Section 8.2.2 then presents two rival ‘global’ trajectories – each originating from different bargaining settings, and each advocating fundamentally different views on how to (re-)shape a host bargaining arena.
